7th Grade Mathematics Guidelines and Procedures

Welcome to 7th grade at Sierra Verde School and our math class. I want this to be a successful year for you. The following rules and procedures are to help us all to do our best.

Behavior: Classroom expectations for behavior are in your handbooks and posted in our classroom. Each student is responsible for his/her own behavior. Students who choose to behave in an inappropriate manner will face consequences cited in your handbook.

The four school wide rules are:

1. Be Respectful

2. Be Responsible

3. Be Safe

4. Have a learner's Attitude ~ YES!

Tardies: A student is considered to be tardy if he/she is not in his/her seat when class begins. Most students will be in class on time and will complete the entire year without ever being tardy. Students will receive an incident report or referral depending on the severity of the tardy.

Textbooks: Math Connects Course 2, Glencoe McGraw-Hill, 2009 and MathScape Seeing and Thinking Mathematically, Glencoe McGraw-Hill, 2005

Effective September 12, 2008 the Online Student Edition is now available for Math Connects: Concepts, Skills, and Problem Solving, Course 2, ISBN 9780078740466

1.  Please login to: http://www.glencoe.com/ose

2.  Enter the following access code:   AF388DDCC2

3. You should see the student edition loading. Once it has loaded you can access the entire student edition.

Each student will be issued one textbook to be used in class and at home. Students are required to have their textbook with them for class each day. Please make sure your textbook has a book cover on it the entire year. We will cover the textbooks in class when they are issued. Now that the Online Student Edition is available, students may store their textbook in the classroom, however it is still the student's responsiblity to complete their homework nightly as assigned. If for any reason a student has computer issues or you are otherwise concerned about the accessability of the online edition, it would be highly advisible for your student to continue to carry their textbook between school and home daily as network problems will not be considered a reason for incompletion of homework.

Daily Requirements:

1. A math notebook is required for the class. All class work, board examples, and notes are to be recorded in the notebook.

2. Homework is to be done neatly on a separate sheet of lined paper titled according to teacher¢â¡Ás instructions. All work must be done when assigned.

3. Warm-ups numbered and completed on a separate sheet of paper

4. Math folder for warm-up paper and any handouts or study guides.

5. Pencil, red pen, colored pencils to use in class for notes and grading papers.

6. Agenda to record homework assignments

Homework: In order to learn any new skill, you must practice. Homework is where you practice your math skills. Since it is practice, it may not be perfect, but is very important that an effort be made to complete every problem on the assignment. Homework is the effort part of your grade and is assigned five points. If you miss more than 30% of your homework you will get three points. You can "redo" the missing problems and resubmit your "redo" by the beginning of the next math class for the full five points. Place "redo" work in the bin for your period marked "redo" on the shelf under the windows. No late work will be accepted.

Championship Work: I expect all students to turn in quality or "championship work."

What this means is work that reflects your best effort. It should be as neat as possible, without unnecessary drawings or artwork. Your work is a reflection of you; turn in work that you are proud of.

Warm Ups: When you enter the classroom, you will usually see 3-5 "Warm Up" problems on the board on the south side of the room. These problems review skills and concepts or introduce the lesson for that day. Each student is required to do the Warm Up problems and record them on a sheet of paper. Warm-ups are numbered and will be collected when the warm-up number is a multiple of five. They will be weighted as a homework / class work. If you are absent, check the Warm-Up book on the counter under the windows to make up the work.

Grades: Points are assigned for homework / class work assignments. Weighting of assignments and assessments are mandated by the district for math for grades 7 -12. The weighting of points for 7th grade math are as follows:

7th Grade Math

Homework/class work: 45%

Tests/Quizzes 55%

Make Up Work: The first thing you should do after you return to school is check the assignment calendar at the back of the room to find out what you have missed. It is your responsibility to get any notes you missed during your absence from a classmate. Absent students will have the same number of days to make up work as the number of days you have missed. Any work assigned before you were absent, and was due during your absence, is due on the day you return to class. Projects are due on the assigned day. If you are going to be absent, please make arrangements to have your project brought to school. If you request work early, it is due upon the day you return. 24 hours notice is necessary if requesting work for an extended absence. If you have questions, see me at the end of class, please, not at the beginning.

Calculators: Calculators are not allowed during testing. I have access to a classroom set of calculators that we can use as needed. Students may wish to bring their own to class to check work. I strongly recommend that it be a very inexpensive scientific calculator.

Agenda: All students are required to use their agenda in math. Assignments will be written on the board each day. Students will copy the assignment in their agenda at the end of the period. Agendas will also be used to record restroom passes.

Daily Procedure: When you enter the classroom, immediately begin to get ready to work. All pencils should be sharpened before class begins. Start working on the Warm Up, have your homework assignment, textbook, and your agenda on you desk.

Heading on Papers: An incorrect or incomplete heading is minus one point on your homework. The heading on your paper should include the following:

Name(first and last)

Date

Period

Page number and assignment

Dismissal: Students are dismissed when all classroom supplies are accounted for, classroom is cleared of debris, and all students are in their seat ready to leave. Wait quietly in your seat until I dismiss the class.

Need Help? I am on campus a half an hour before and after school most days. Please just let me know that you are planning to come in for assistance.
